| Lifestyle | My Evening Winter Skincare Routine 2019

Itchy skin, allergies, dry patches, redness - welcome to my winter skincare struggle! Skincare used to be so simple when I was younger, all I need to so was own a basic cleanser and a basic moisturizer, one for night and one for day but now that I am quickly leaving my 20's, everything has changed. My allergies have gotten worse and have affected my skin in substantial ways. My skin gets itchy, red, and gets even drier during these cold months. I have found myself gravitating to a very rich, nourishing, and somewhat elaborate skincare routine. While it is a little complex, it has improved my skin's health and appearance so much! My skin is the most youthful and glowing it has looked in a very long time, especially during this difficult time of the year for my skin. So let's get into my elaborate evening routine.

CLEANSE - daily

I first start with removing my makeup and because I already have to many steps in my routine, I love rely on these product to remove my makeup quickly, effectively, and easily. The Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (full review here) and the Instytutum Transforming Melting Cleanser are both excellent cleansing balms that melt off any makeup and removes it completely from the skin. I simply rub about a quarter-sized dollop of product between my palms to warm it up and I rub it into my face, starting with my eyes, where there is the most makeup. I rinse this off with some warm water.

I then follow up with a gentle cleanser, I'm currently loving the Elemis Superfood Facial Wash (full review here), which is a great gentle foaming face wash packed with Superfood nutrients!

EXFOLIATE & MASK - x1 per week

Once a week either on different days or the same day, I will exfoliate and mask. If I have the time to mask more often, I will. I notice a huge difference in my skin when I mask regularly, especially in these cold and dry conditions.

Because I don't want to over exfoliate my already very dry skin, I have been using very gentle exfoliators. My favorite physical scrubs are the Elemis Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator (full review here) and the Malie Organics Botany Beauty Scrub (full review here). These have very fine and gentle particles that helps smooth texture but doesn't damage the skin. If I don't use a physical exfoliant, I will use a gentle exfoliating toner. My current favorites are the REN Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic (full review here) and the Instytutum Resurfacing Glow Toner. Both of these are excellent gentle chemical exfoliators that don't strip the skin but helps removes dead skin cells to make your skin glow.

When it comes to masking, I feel like you can't do it enough. Adding a boost of nourishment and love into your skin regularly, is never a bad thing. I try to use a sheet mask at least once a week to hydrate, plump, and nourish my skin. My favorite sheet masks are these affordable daily sheet masks from Lululun Deep Moisturizing Sheet Masks (full review here). If not a sheet mask, I recommend choosing a nourishing and hydrating mask, like the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Mask. Anyways, I find my skin looks better the more I mask but once a week is sufficient enough to keep my skin looking and feeling good.

NOURISH - daily

These next steps I always thought didn't make a difference until I started doing them consistently and found products that really work for my skin. I'm obsessed with my toner/essence and my serum step.

While toners and essences are two very different things, I use them interchangeably. For the most part, I feel like I only need one or the other for this step in my routine. I have been religiously using my Tatcha The Essence Plumping Skin Softener, which is a miracle water that has made my skin so plump, smooth, and soft! I pour a small amount of the product into my clean palms and I press it all over my face. I give it a minute to absorb and then I go in with my serum.

The serums I can't live without at the moment are the Dr. Jart Firming Serum and Dr. Jart Radiance Serum! They actually do exactly what they say they do and my skin hasn't looked better. I usually switch off between the two. The Firming Serum actually makes my skin look more youthful, plumps out my skin, and increases my elasticity. While the Radiance Serum actually makes my skin glow and look so fresh and healthy!

HYDRATE - daily

Finally, we're at the hydrating step which involves two products. This is essential for providing a ton of hydration and locking in moisture throughout the evening. I first go with a couple drops (about 3-4) of an oil, which I massage into my skin for added hydration and an enhanced glow. Here are some of my current favorites, which I switch up every few nights or depending on what mood I'm in:

Malie Organics Botany Beauty Illuminating Serum (full review)
Instytutum Powerful Retin Oil
Herbivore Phoenix Oil (full review)
Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Oil
Elemis Superfood Oil (full review)
Truly Organics Purple Rain Glow Serum

Because I am using a rich oil as essentially a secondary serum, this final moisturizing step is to seal in everything and add more nourishment but not a ton more hydration. If I add an additional extra emollient moisturizer, it will be too heavy for my skin and I risk clogging the pores and causing milia to form. My favorite light weight and nourishing moisturizers for this final step are the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, the Elemis Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix, and the REN Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream. So I know the REN one is labeled Day Cream but its a great calming formula that treats my skin irritation and redness. Plus it has this lovely lightweight gel-like texture. Both the Elemis creams also have a light gel-cream texture that is perfect to seal in the moisture and add a little more nourishment to my skin.

FINAL RESULTS

While this may seem like a lot of steps, it gets done very quickly and the results are astonishing! In the morning, my skin is super hydrated, glowing, and so soft. I love how fresh my complexion look and how plump my skin looks. I may have fine lines but you wouldn't be able to tell because my skin is so fresh and plump. My skin literally drinks up everything that I placed on it the night before and puts it all to good use, repairing and renewing my skin while I sleep! Sometimes, especially for the winter season, you just need to really layer on the products and give your skin the extra love it needs.
