Fenty Beauty Bright Fix Eye Brightener Concealer Review and Swatches

| Review | Fenty Beauty Bright Fix Eye Brightener Concealer

There honestly hasn't been an as exciting launch from Fenty for me as the launch of this concealer. I think what I found so appealing about this concealer concept is partly in the color range and partly due to the brightening formula. The promise of a brightening and lightweight concealer is something I can’t resist. However, I often find hype and reality can be two very different things.

The Fenty Beauty Bright Fix Eye Brightener Concealer retails for $25.00 USD and is available at Sephora and other retailers. This concealer is packaged in a small dusty pink squeezable plastic tube with a clear bulbous plastic tip. The packaging is very cute and chic. I like that you can see the actual product through the tip. I did find that the tube is not easy to squeeze and control the amount you're distributing. I feel like sometimes I can get a little bit but other times I distribute too much. I think it depends on where the product is in the tube so, it depends on how the tube is stored.

I think the bulbous tip is for applying the concealer directly to the under eyes but I think this is not a good applicator. It will just smear the product around but not assist with bleeding the product into the skin. I find the best way to apply this product is to squeeze a bit onto the back of your hand and apply the product with a brush, finger, or sponge.

SHADES

This concealer has an extensive range of 16 shades with various undertones to correct darkness on a variety of skin tones. There are 4 corrector shades that are designed to be suitable for all skin tones, Rose Quartz ( a brightening light rose shade for fair to medium skin tones), Butter ( a brightening light yellow-toned shade for fair to medium skin tones), Peach ( a brightening peach shade for medium to tan skin tones), and Pumpkin( a brightening amber brown shade for tan to deep skin tones).  The rest of the shades are concealers with these various undertones to them. I decided to try one corrector shade a one concealer shade. I chose my concealer shade to be a bit lighter because I like a slightly lighter tone than my skin tone.

Peach (corrector) - This shade is a very true peach corrector shade and leans quite orange-toned. So much so, that I don't think this shade can be used alone. I usually mix this shade with the other Fenty brightener concealer shade or layer this shade under other concealers.

Melon (concealer) - This shade is a light peachy-toned melon shade. It is lighter and brighter than the Peach shade. This shade has an almost pastel base color to it.

FORMULA

This formula is described as “An underrated brightener that hydrates, brightens, and conceals - with sheer to buildable coverage - Delivering a no-makeup effect and long wear formula”. There’s a lot of lovely promises contained in this extra-long sentence, which I find so appealing but in actual performance, I don’t think this formula hits all the marks. Trust me, I wanted this to be my end-all, be-all concealer for life but, it’s not the perfect heavenly formula described here, at least on me.

Let’s start with hydrating, it isn’t drying but hydrating... that’s a stretch for me. The serum-like texture is deceiving because while light and fresh in texture, it doesn’t actually provide hydration to my under eyes. I find a cream concealer to be more “hydrating” than this formula.

The next claim is brightening. Yes! This formula does really brighten the undereye area! The available shades of this concealer correct any darkness and shadowy discoloration under the eyes. Then, the actual pigment in this formula is quite brightening and really gives your under eyes that wide awake and fresh look!

Conceals. Yes, this formula is a concealer but it isn’t the best concealer. It offers a light-to-medium coverage and while you can build the coverage, you can really only build it to a medium-ish coverage. I find that if my darkness is even a little darker than it normally is, it really won’t cover it. You will see an ashy tone under the eyes and layering on the product doesn’t help. In this case, I used this as a corrector and layered on a concealer to actually conceal under the eyes. I don’t consider my under eyes to be that bad and yet, this formula still doesn’t completely correct and cover it.

I think I touched on the coverage already but “sheer to buildable” is vaguely accurate. It is both sheer and buildable but it fails to tell you that it doesn’t build up that much. Also, it doesn’t look good built up because it still doesn’t correct or covers much more. Plus, it doesn’t look nice heavily layered under the eyes. This goes into the next claim of “delivering a no-makeup effect”.

This formula most certainly does NOT deliver a “no-makeup effect”! I love natural and minimal makeup. Unfortunately, because of the soft matte finish of this product and the way it sits on top of the skin, it looks like makeup on the skin. Even when you try to blend it into the skin with a finger or sponge, it doesn't blend well into the skin. The biggest issue with this concealer is that it doesn't blend or sink into the skin, it sits on top of it and it looks textured in some areas because it contrasts so greatly with your skin's actual texture.

If you have dry skin like I do, this concealer picks up on the most subtle texture and lines. Even when I felt like I had no texture, it seemed to create a very subtle texture because it sits so awkwardly on the skin. While it doesn't sink into lines, it does kind of crack when laid over lines. The more product you layer, the makeup effect becomes even more apparent. It almost looks slightly chalky on the skin. There's really nothing natural or subtle about the soft matte finish, which makes it very clear you have product underneath the eyes. Admittedly, the texture that is picked up by this concealer is subtle and isn't noticeable on camera but close up and in-person, you can see the texture of the product and the texture of the skin.

Finally, the claim of long-wearing, which is very accurate. This formula is very long-wearing because it is so thin and it doesn't move or fade much on the skin. I have worn this for beyond eight hours with very little fading. Once it is applied, it doesn't move much and it blends nicely into your base products. I'm very happy with the wear of this product but I just wish it had a more natural finish that blended into the skin.

THE LOOK

You can't really see the texture of this product in pictures but in person, the texture isn't really appealing. It looks quite dry and emphasizes my lines. You can see it if you zoom in under my eyes.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I'm personally a little disappointed in this formula. It really is not what I expected, considering the way it was described. I was expecting a much more natural finish to the skin and a formula that blends into the skin and doesn't just sit on the skin. This formula brings forth texture I didn't think really existed and the coverage isn't enough to cover shadowy darkness yet, this formula doesn't layer well on the skin. While this concealer doesn't look bad on camera or at a distance in person, I just don't love the way it looks when I look at myself in the mirror. At the end of the day, I think makeup comes down to how you feel about the product and not necessarily how others perceive it. I'm not 100% happy with the way this looks on me but I will continue to play with it and mix it with other products to make it work. I don't think this should be a situation anyone should be in, trying to make something work for them. If you are interested in this product, I highly recommend playing with it in person before committing to purchase because I really don't think this formula works for everyone.
