| Review | Tom Ford Satin Matte Lipsticks

A new lipstick release from our good friends at Tom Ford, the Satin Matte Lipsticks. Despite owning so many of their lipsticks, I couldn't resist grabbing a few of these beauties after seeing the shade offerings! There were quite a few beautiful nudes that I couldn't help swooning over and of course, the names are devilishly delicious! If you know anything about Tom Ford and his range, he doesn't hold back from shockingly vulgar names, which personally I don't mind at all. I think there is a charm to his carefree attitude and his willingness to push the boundaries.

The Tom Ford Satin Matte Lipsticks retail for $55.00 USD and is available at Sephora and other retailers. These lipsticks are housed in long cognac lipstick tubes and look very sleek.  I like the longer shape to them because they offer this femininity and chic vibe. The packaging feel heavy like his traditional lipsticks, adding to the luxurious feel.

SHADES

The range of shades is pretty massive and includes many nude shades to vibrant and bold shades. With 20 shades in total, this is a pretty big release into the permanent range. I chose 4 shades to start but I am tempted to go back for some more shades, especially with cheeky names like "Pussy Power" and "Shaggable". I can't help giggling every time I see these names. The shades I have are:

Preternatural - This true griege (purple-grey-beige) shade is just a stunning and wearable cool toned nude! This shade wasn't available in many stores for a while even after other shades had shipped and when they finally received shipment,  many stores only had three units! I always gravitate toward these shades because I so desperately want one that doesn't make me look like a corpse, this one totally delivers! It has the perfect blend of lavender, grey, and beige that looks chic, instead of zombie-esque. I still recommend using a lip liner and because I don't own any of the Tom Ford Lip Liners, I love the NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner in Brooklyn Thorn. It has the perfect grey stone-like color that pairs beautifully with this shade. If you feel like this liner is too grey for you, I also recommend the Maybelline Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liner in Gone Greige, which has  a little bit more for a mauve tone to balance out the grey tones.

Without Lip Liner

With NYX Lip Liner

La Nudite - This is a warm soft caramel nude shade. It reminds me a lot of Sable Smoke. This shade will compliment many skin tones but will particularly flatter medium and tan skin tones.

Blow Up - This shade is a cool toned baby pink shade. It reminds me a lot of a borderline Barbie-pink kind of shade. I think this will look really beautiful on a fair skin tone. I personally like wearing this shade when I'm not as tan because when you're tan it can look too stark against a tanned skin tone.

Peche Perfect - This shade is a soft tangerine-coral shade. It looks quite orange in the tube but when it is applied to the lips, the orange tones are more toned down and there is a pinch of pink to the color.

FORMULA & FINISH

The big question everyone keeps asking me is "Are these matte? What are they?". The simple answer is no, they aren't matte. They are actually exactly as Tom Ford kind of describes, they are a satin matte. They have a more mattified finish than a satin lipstick but they have the creamy texture from a satin lipstick and aren't a flat matte. I guess the best description is a creamy matte.

I have to say, I love this finish because I typically hate matte lipsticks because they tend to be drying and emphasize lip lines. This lipstick has a soft blotted-lip look that appears matte but doesn't emphasize texture as much. This formula is still not the most forgiving on dry lips, so I still recommend you prep your lips and ensure they're aren't too many dry patches. I think the overall finish and effect is really beautiful! The soft matte finish looks very plush and kissable! It gives you this velvety finish that I haven't found in other matte lipsticks. I still feel I need to have very well prepped lips because while the formula is nourishing, the finish still emphasizes texture. This formula seems to sit on top of the lips more than traditional lipstick formulas. It doesn't fuse as seamlessly as other formulas with the lips.

Despite the lip color sitting on the lips a bit more than other formulas, it is has a very creamy texture and feels lovely and rich on the lips. The color is also very opaque but because the formula sits on top of the lip, it takes several swipes to create and even color. Also, pressing the lips together can cause some unevenness in application. I recommend taking the lipstick bullet and tapping it on the lips to even out any patches or lines. Because the formula has a more slip to it than traditional lipsticks, these lipsticks last about 4-6 hours, depending on how much you're eating, drinking, and talking. This isn't that far off from traditional lipsticks. I do find that the brighter lip colors last longer but that isn't surprising.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I really love the shade range in this formula! There is a great variety of nude to bold shades in this range and the formula is very comfortable. I don't think this formula is anything special but it is beautiful and luxurious. For me, I prefer this satin-matte finish to a true matte finish. I find it much more comfortable to wear all day and the overall look is much softer. I recommend this formula if you have found some shades you really like. I personally think the range of nudes in this collection is absolutely beautiful! I love Preternatural and La Nudite a lot! These are becoming staple shades in my collection and routine.
