| Review | Tom Ford Eye Color Crème Eyeshadow Quad

Wow, just when I was starting to give up on the Tom Ford brand entirely, they reel me back in with this exciting new launch! Let's be real, for the past few years, the brand has been really slipping with its launches. Everything just felt stale and all the same. Plus, the quality was so hit or miss, it was hard to rely on them. The prices skyrocketed over the past few years too and I was just about to write them off entirely. This was a bold move to release a cream eyeshadow palette because not many brands are doing something like this and not many brands can do it well. Well, now they have me paying attention to them again!

The Tom Ford Eye Color Crème Eyeshadow Quads retail for $89.00 USD and is available at Sephora and other retailers. This new eyeshadow formula is housed in the same exact packaging as their powder eyeshadow quads, which I appreciate because as a collector, it makes it very to store when the packaging is the same. The cognac-colored compact is made of lightweight plastic and has gold trim. The compact is magnetic, which is luxurious but I am concerned that this packaging isn't airtight enough to prevent the creams from drying out. However, the formula may be unique and it may not dry out as easily as traditional cream eyeshadows. It is hard to know as this is a new formulation for the brand and for the industry, as far as I can tell!

SHADES

This new formula from Tom Ford is currently available in three palettes - Rose Topaz, Tiger Eye, Smokey Quartz. All the available colorways are currently very neutral and wearable. In fact, the shades in all the palettes are quite similar in tone. I would have liked to see a little more variation but I am happy to see a couple different colorways to suit a variety of skin tones.

Each palette is a quad, containing four different shades and with some palettes containing different textures. While all the quads contain different shades and some with different textures. the formula is pretty consistent from shade to shade. Let's talk about these colorways in depth.

Rose Topaz

Nude Pink (top left) - This shade is a very pale pink-tinted nude shade that will only really show up on a very fair skin tone. On my medium skin tone, it practically blends into my skin tone and makes it look a bit ashy so, on someone with a deeper skin tone than mine, it will look very ashy. I can use this shade as a crease blending shade or as a very light lid shade. This is my least used shade in the entire palette because it just doesn't suit my coloring.

Shimmering Warm Champagne (top right) - This shade is a warm champagne with a very fine pearl throughout. It really gives the eyes a soft luminosity that looks slightly glossy. I love this shade as a pop of brightness in the inner corner of the eyes but it also makes a beautiful lid shade or as a pop in the center of the eyes.

Silver Sparkle (bottom left) - This silver sparkle shade doesn't really have much of a base color at all, it is pretty much only very fine silvery sparkle. The beauty of this finish in a creme texture is that all these fine shimmers will really cling to the eyes. It can look slightly glossy due to the very fine particles and the way they twinkle in the light but this eyeshadow looks closer to a powder eyeshadow. You can enhance the glossy finish by applying a different cream eyeshadow underneath.

Deep Cool Slate (bottom right) - This shade is a very cool deep slate or taupe shade. It has a hint of brown but it runs very cool and leans quite gray toned. It is a very intense shade that allows you to add a ton of definition to the eyes. It works beautifully as a liner or smoke shade for the eyes.

Tiger Eye

Warm Light Gold (top left) - This light gold shade has a warmth to it but the shade brings a lot of brightness and light to the eyes. The finish is shimmery but still soft. It makes a lovely lid shade.

Peachy Gold (top right) - This shade is a peach shade with a strong golden shimmer throughout it. It is a duo-chrome eyeshadow with a slight pinky undertone. On a medium to deep skin tone, the gold shimmer is what mostly comes through but on a fair skin tone, you will get more of the peachy-pink undertone.

Golden Bronze (bottom left) - This shade is a light golden bronze that is suitable for all skin tones. The shade has some small particles of shimmer but this finish is more of a soft pearl finish.

Deep Chocolate (bottom right) - This shade is a rich deep chocolate shade that leans cool, which helps balance out this very warm palette. It adds a lot of definition and smokiness to any look.

Smokey Quartz

Light Ochre (top left) - This shade is a very light matte ochre shade that is very similar to a light warm skin tone. If you have a medium to deep skin tone, this shade may just blend into your skin tone or be a very light base color. On my skin tone, it pretty much blends in and slightly lightens my lid color. On a fair skin tone, you may actually be able to use this as a lid or crease shade.

Light Neutral Pink (top right) - This shade is light neutral pink tone that is also very skin tone-like. Again, if you have a medium or deep skin tone, this may just blend into your skin or it will appear very light and possibly ashy. On a fair skin tone, this can be used as a crease or lid shade.

Warm Rosy Brown (bottom left) - This shade is a warm rosy brown that flatters most skin tones. It's a smooth matte brown that works well as a crease or lid shade.

Deep Cool Slate (bottom right) - This shade is a deep cool slate brown with a purple undertone. This shade pairs well with the other shades in the palette and really delivers a ton of dimension to a look. This shade works really well as a liner or as a smoke shade.

FORMULA

This formula is INCREDIBLY unique! It has the texture of a powder eyeshadow but it behaves like a cream! No, this is not a cream to powder formula. I literally mean that when you pick this product up on a brush, it looks like particles of powder! However, when you start to apply it, it melts into the skin like a cream and blends like one too! It's the strangest, most unusual, and most unique eyeshadows I have ever come across! It also has a drier cream texture that feels like a powder eyeshadow! These feel creamy and like silk on the eyes! It was a very nice and silky formula that feels so effortless!

The biggest issue I have with this powdery cream formula is that when you do apply it with a brush, you will get fallout! Even worse, the fallout is a cream so, you can't just easily sweep it away with a  brush. If you try to sweep it away, it will just smear into your skin. These apply best with fingers because these behave the most like a cream when you use your fingers and you can avoid the fallout issue. The problem with this is that you get very little precision with your fingers. I like using the deeper shades on my lashline but when I use my pencil brush, I get a lot of fallout. The best solution to reduce the fallout problem is to work the eyeshadow into your brush before applying it to your eyes or use the included sponge tip applicators! What??? That's right! I have always felt that these little applicators are so useless but this is one of the rare cases when it is so helpful to have them! They allow you to apply the eyeshadow precisely but it minimizes the fallout!

What's super cool about this powdery cream formula is that it allows you to achieve an effortless and polished look very quickly! These eyeshadows blend so easily and give the look very seamless on the eyes. It looks like your eyeshadow skills are a lot better than they may be because they diffuse so beautifully it makes your eyeshadows look perfectly blended every time! These may apply like a cream but the finish of the eyeshadows is very similar to powder eyeshadows. It has this soft and almost matted finish that powder eyeshadows have even when the eyeshadow has reflects in it. It's very interesting because even the sparkling eyeshadows that give a "wet" look to the eyes, they give the look of a powder eyeshadow that has a reflect not like a cream eyeshadow. It's unusual and not necessarily a bad thing. I think it's a very unique and pretty take on a cream eyeshadow.

These eyeshadows layer very well with each other and the pigment is really buildable. You can get a very soft and diffused look with the shadows or build the shadows for a more intense but still diffused look. What's nice about these eyeshadows is that if you apply a little too much in an area, you can always just blend it and it diffuses itself and looks really seamless. Unlike powder eyeshadows, if you apply too much, you may not be able to just blend it out and still have it look good. These eyeshadows also work really well layered with other eyeshadows particularly, powder eyeshadows because they behave so similarly.

Since these are cream eyeshadows they don't last as long as powder eyeshadows without a primer. Depending on how oily your eyelids are, you may find these lasting between five to eight hours without a primer before fading. These also have a tendency to crease a little. They crease a lot less than a typical cream eyeshadow due to their powdery formula. I don't really notice creasing until several hours of wear time and it depends on the shades and the condition in which you are wearing the eyeshadows.

THE LOOK

In the first look, I used the Rose Topaz palette. I applied the Shimmering Warm Champagne and the Silver Sparkle shades to the center of the lid. Then, I used the Cool Deep Slate shade to line and wing out the eyes. I also blended some of this shade on the outer corner for a more smoky look.

In the second look, I used the Tiger Eye palette. I applied the Peachy Gold to the outer and inner crease of the eye. I then applied the Golden Bronze to the outer and inner corner. Then, I layered the Deep Chocolate shade to the outer and inner corners of the eye. Finally, I applied the Warm Light Gold to ther very center or the lid for a bright pop.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Initially, I only purchased two of the shades because I had my doubts about this formula but after my first time testing this eyeshadow formula, I ran to buy the last quad I hadn't purchased! As a huge fan of cream eyeshadows, I'm so impressed and obsessed with these! They are absolutely phenomenal and so unique! Aside from the fallout issue when using brushes, I have no other complaints about the formula. The formula is truly unique and luxurious! It is a formula I have never tried or seen before in the industry! This formula has renewed my faith in the brand because they have finally released a unique and interesting formula. This is a big step in the right direction for the brand after years of stale, boring, and low-quality releases. For the price, it may be very steep even for this beautiful formula. Tom Ford has never been known for its affordability. Even with such lovely formula, it is questionable whether it is worth it. I have enjoyed this formula a lot and I highly recommend it for those willing to spend the pricey amount it costs.

  1. Hey Liz, long time peruse, first time commenting! I got both of the ranges, despite the fact that I initially expected to simply get the warm. Haven39t utilized them yet am intrigued to know how the blushes contrast with Love Lust and Wicked. I did 39t realize TF reformulated the blushes...I need to say I&#39m somewhat disheartened to hear that since I own 5 out of the 6 in the first recipe and I wouldnt 39t change anything about them. Another blogger said that the shadows in the warm range were a similar equation as Nude Dip yet I think she39s most likely mixed up? They unquestionably dont 39t appear to be identical in the pan...thanks for the extraordinary blog!

    1. Hi Kate! I'm a little bit confused exactly what you're asking about. You mentioned the Tom Ford Blushes but also they're eyeshadows. The eyeshadows featured in this blog are not the same formulas as Nude Dip. Nude Dip has a baked powder formula, whereas, these are actually a cream formula but they just feel very powder-like. As far as the new blush duos they are a brand powder new formula for the Tom Ford brand. I only own one shade and there seem to be no similar blush duos to the original Tom Ford blush range. It is very unfortunate... So, happy to hear you're enjoying the blog! I hope I answered your questions but if I didn't can you please clearly rephrase what you're trying to ask me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks! xoxo
