Cheek products are hot this year and they're definitely making Major Beauty Headlines, Patrick Ta would know. Maybe this is why he came out with a cheek collection that includes both powder and cream formulas. These blush duos give you the versatility of both cream and powder formulas. This isn't a new concept but as many beauty enthusiasts know, layering products with different textures give you more dimension to your look. Plus, it can help increase the longevity of your makeup.

The Patrick Ta Major Beauty Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush retails for $34.00 USD and is available at Sephora and other retailers. This blush duo is packaged in the iconic reflective rose gold Patrick Ta compact. This plastic compact is lightweight and very prone to fingerprints and scratches.

This packaging is the same compact as the Major Brow (full review here), which is this strange "reverse" compact where the top of the compact wraps around to the bottom. This is more secure but it is very awkward and makes it very difficult to open. It's isn't a very intuitive compact because you want to lift the top of the compact but because it wraps around to the bottom, it doesn't easily open. You have to pry the compact open because it snaps flush with the bottom of the compact. The annoying part is this is a new innovation to his blush packaging because his original powder blushes just have a standard snap closure with the ridge on the end to pry the compact open. This basic packaging is much more practical than this new packaging.

What I do like about this packaging is that there is a separate plastic covering for the cream blush! This is essential, in my opinion, if you're going to put a cream and powder product in the same palette. Nothing is more irritating than having to wipe off particles of powder out of your cream products. This keeps the two products from contaminating each other.

SHADES

These blush duos come in 4 different shade combinations. Each duo contains one powder blush and one cream blush of a complementing color. Currently, there are 4 different duos and I own two of them.

She's So LA - Not only does the name appeal to me as an LA native but these shades are right up alley! There's nothing I love more on the cheeks than a neutral blush and this neutral bronzy duo is very universally flattering.

Cream - The cream shade in this duo is a warm and rich caramel tan shade with a subtle orange undertone. You can see the warm undertone more when it's blended onto the skin. It's a very fresh and sunkissed flush that will work for any skin tone. This neutral shade works well for those who already have flushed cheeks but want to wear a blush that won't emphasize redness.

Powder - The powder blush in this duo is a rosy bronze shade with very fine golden shimmer. Again, there is a warm subtle orange undertone to this shade.

Do We Know Her? - This duo is the perfect spring and summer peachy flush. It's described as a coral duo but the actual shades are a bit lighter and not as vibrant or orange as I expect corals to be. I think this duo will work for fair to tan skin tones but it may be too light for much deeper skin tones.

Cream - This shade is a fresh peach with a subtle touch of an orange undertone. It's a very juicy and fresh shade on the cheeks.

Powder - The powder blush in the palette is much lighter in color than the cream. It is a soft and light creamy peach shade with an almost pastel finish. This kind of pastel finish makes it a bit light and chalky on deeper skin tones because it has an almost-white undertone to it.

FORMULA

Cream

The cream formula in this duo is beautiful and quite impressive! The cream blush has a very emollient, sheer, and glossy texture. The sheer pigmentation of this cream allows you to really build the product on the skin, which is ideal for a cream blush. This is especially important because it is part of this duo and if you'd like to layer the two products, you would want both of them to sheer with buildable coverage to avoid going overboard.

The finish of this blush is very fresh and glossy! I love the emollience and fresh texture of this cream blush. It really does give your skin a very healthy and fresh glow. Those with more of an oily skin type will probably want to avoid this texture because it will be too glossy because it borders on the wet-looking type of texture. This texture and gloss finish does not set down and will look wet on the skin. It doesn't feel sticky or tacky but the wet texture will attract hair to stick to it.

The beauty of the duos is you can always layer the powder on top for longevity, an extra punch of color, and to set the glossy finish down. Layering will take away a lot of the glossy glow but your blush will still have this glow-form-within look. You can also layer the cream blush on top of the powder, which works beautifully without disrupting the powder underneath because of the sheer and emollient texture. This gives much more of that fresh and glossy look but a little more dialed down on the gloss and dialed up on the color.

Due to its glossy finish and emollient texture, this cream blush doesn't last nearly as long as other formulas. You will get on average about 3-5 hours of wear before fading, depending on your skin type and the environmental conditions. It reminds me very much of the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate formula (see reviews on the cheek palettes here and the cheek sticks here and here), which also is very emollient and sheer but for a fraction of the cost. I think that's why I love the cream formula so much. This does mean you'll most likely have to touch your blush up, which isn't a huge issue because this cream applies beautifully with fingers or a brush and the compact is travel-friendly.

Powder

These powder blushes have a slightly more dense texture than other blushes I've tried. They are a sheer to buildable pigmentation, again, this is ideal and easier for application. They blend into the skin seamlessly and look very natural. They have a softness to them that just looks very diffused and like a natural flush. Due to the denser texture of the powder, you need to be careful when layering this on top of the cream blush because it will adhere really strongly. Luckily, it blends out very easily.

I find that when worn alone, these powder blushes don't last very long, which is a shame. These powder blushes tend to fade on me about 4-5 hours into the wear. I'm not sure why this is the case but the formula just lacks longevity. When layered, you can get much closer to a full day of wear without the fading but this often makes me feel like I have too much blush on. For this reason, I'm not a huge fan of his powder blushes but they are very pretty on the cheeks. When they fade, they fade very evenly and you won't notice any patchiness in the cheek color.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I really love the idea of having two formula options in one compact because I can always easily switch up my look and play with textures on the cheeks. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of his powder blush formula. I find the texture of the powder to be too dense and the longevity to be lacking for a powder blush. The cream blush for me is a huge winner and I'd like to see the cream blushes sold individually. They remind me very much of the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate formula, which I love, but these cheek colors are limited edition and aren't as affordable or accessible. If you want an almost spot-on formula, the creams from these duos are it! They offer a fresh and glossy finish to the skin that is unlike many cream blushes and the buildable formula is effortless and easy to use.

I don't find myself layering these two that much because I prefer one or the other for a natural look. In that sense, I don't get much use out of the duos themselves but I can see why these would be great for a makeup artist. This is something that I would place in my kit because it's so compact and allows you to have both cream and powder options. Overall, for the price and quality, I would still recommend these cheek palettes. I think while the powder blushes aren't exceptional, they are very nice and the cream blushes are truly phenomenal!
