| Review | By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Serum
These illuminating serums have been on my list for ages now and I'm so grateful that By Terry sent these serums over for me to review but as always, my review will remain honest and impartial. If you have been following this blog for some time, you will know I'm obsessed with anything illuminating and anything that is a skincare-makeup hybrid, so there's no doubt that these have quickly become essentials in my routine. I love anything that will add luminosity to my skin while treating it. These illuminating serums are also special because they not only contain skincare but they are also designed to help correct the tone of the skin! I'm so excited to finally review these on the blog.
The By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Serums retail for $91.00 for 1.01 oz/30 ml USD and are available at By Terry, Nordstrom, Beautylish and other retailers. These CC Serums are housed in sturdy and luxurious glass bottles with a pump. It is very easy to control the amount of product being released however, one pump is typically enough for the entire face. The bottle also contains a little ball inside to mix the product thoroughly because the contents do separate. The glass bottles are heavy with a reflective pump and cap. I love being able to see the beautiful luminous liquid contained inside each bottle.
SHADES
These illuminating serums come in 4 permanent shades, as well as the occasional release of a limited edition shade for the holidays or special collections. These four core shades have been part of the By Terry line for years and it is clear why because they are versatile, span a variety of skincare concerns, and skin tones.
Immaculate Light - This shade is a true light white pearl shade that brightens any skin tone but its probably best for light to medium skin tones. It's a very illuminating shade since it is a white pearl color and can be used as a subtle highlighter on the cheekbones.
Rose Elixir - This shade is a very light pink with pink and white pearls throughout it. Pink is a very brightening shade, especially on a fair pink-toned skin tone. Rose tones are meant to help correct brown spots from acne scarring or sunspots.
Apricot Glow - This shade is a golden yellow with gold pearl throughout it. Yellow is a great correct for redness and can also help with brightening warm skin tones.
Sunny Flash - This shade is a bronze pearl. Like it claims, it adds a sunkissed glow to the skin and for deep skin tones, it will correct discoloration. This is easily the most popular shades because it gives a very natural bronze glow to all skin tones without looking orange. It's a great shade to mix into foundations to deepen them just slightly and add warmth.
You're probably wondering what this product actually is, is it makeup? It is skincare? It's both! It's a makeup-skincare hybrid that is supposed to illuminate, correct, perfect, and prime the skin for your base.
The purpose of the shade range is to correct your skin according to your needs, hence the "CC", which stands for color correcting. This product helps give you a better overall tone to your skin and reduces discoloration, redness, and dullness. All the serums are very luminous but also very sheer, so they can work on many skin tones. The reflective particles in the serum are super shiny and they don't emphasize texture or pores. The reflect actually helps perfect the skin by diffusing imperfections and discoloration.
These CC Serums don't really significantly correct the skin like a corrector would, but they do provide a minor color correcting effect and a beautiful soft luminous glow to the skin. I think what makes this formula so special is its ability to diffuse imperfections, almost like a real-life filter on the skin. It gives the skin this soft ethereal glow.
When choosing a shade, I recommend purchasing one that will suit your skin tone the best, however, these are all quite sheer and very versatile. They blend into the skin seamlessly leaving a fresh glow and lightly correcting imperfections. I don't think it's necessary to own all the shades, however, if you really enjoy this formula, it is nice to mix and match by placing different shades in different areas of the face. They are also nice for targeted highlighting the skin or mixing into your foundation for a special effect.
These CC Serums do set to the skin, so there isn't a greasy or wet finish to the skin. It still provides a glossy glow but without the tackiness and wetness. It glides on well over products and works well underneath products too. These serums do have a rose fragrance that is light and disappears as soon as the product is blended into the skin.

EFFECT
This product is intended to be mostly used alone or underneath your base as a correcting and illuminating primer, however, it has a very similar consistency to a liquid highlighter, so you can use it as you would a liquid highlighter. In fact, its recommended uses are those of a liquid highlighter. Here is the effect and effectiveness of the serum when used in these various ways.
Used Alone - These are very sheer and offer a sheer veil of luminosity and a barely-there-hint of color. These CC Serums very subtly perfect the skin and add a healthy luminous glow. I would use them alone on a good skin day or when you don't feel like wearing makeup because they just make your overall complexion look a little bit better and healthier.
Under Foundation - These CC Serums make a beautiful primer for your foundation. It helps correct and perfect the skin, which means you can achieve a flawless look with less product. It also adds a beautiful soft and dewy glow. I think this product makes an excellent illuminating primer. I am a big fan of illuminating primers and I won quite a few that offer a similar effect. I would say this one is on par, with other luxury brand illuminating primers I have used. The effect is apparent but more subtle than

Mixed with Foundation - This is probably my favorite method of using this product because it is so subtle. Mixing it in with you base offers more of a noticeable glow to the skin but it doesn't significantly affect the finish of your base. Obviously, it will add a very subtle tint but even mixing in a significant amount of the CC Serum doesn't alter the color of your base significantly. This method still offers a subtle and soft overall glow that looks healthy but not greasy.
Targeted Highlighter - These work very well as a targeted highlighter. I was surprised because the formula is so light and thin but these offer a beautiful without looking too shiny or metallic. These serums don't move the product or foundation around underneath, which is often an issue with liquid highlighters. This product sets to the skin, leaving a glossy glow without any wetness or tack texture to the skin.
SKINCARE BENEFITS
Like many skincare-makeup hybrids, I advise you to take all claims with a grain of salt, especially if there are radical skincare claims. However, By Terry doesn't claim anything radical. This product offers hydration, the formula is enriched with "Rose Native Cells ", which I believe to be By Terry's exclusive rose extract skincare ingredient that is meant to rejuvenate and renew the skin. This product also claims to contain a "Brightening Agent", not very specific, and Vitamin E, which helps with free-radical damage and boosts radiance. All these benefits sound wonderful and after using it for a while now, I can feel and see the hydration and brightening benefits. While this serum feels nice on the skin, don't expect it to make any radical changes to your skin, even after consistent long-term use. Consider it a bonus to this luxury beauty product.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I really love the formula of this product because it doesn't add any additional moisture or a wet texture to your skin. It very much feels like a hybrid between a primer and a liquid highlighter. Because this formula sets to the skin, it creates a beautiful healthy sheen to the skin, instead of altering the texture of your base to create a glow. Additionally, the texture when it sets makes for a beautifully smooth base for your makeup to sit on top of and adhere to. This product will work very well for all skin types because of it's unique texture and finish.
If you have oily skin and often liquid illuminators, this one is for you. The glow is so soft and subtle without the additional texture. My preferred method of using this product is mixing it into my base or as a primer for my base. I feel this yields the best results for me, either serving as a good priming base or to add that extra glow to my complexion.
Compared to other luxury products in the same family, this one is on par with some of the best makeup-skincare hybrids I have tried. It has become a staple in my daily routine for giving me fresh, healthy, and glowing skin. This product is great for makeup and skincare lovers alike because it gives you the best of both worlds. While I'm not relying on it for the treatment of my skin, the skincare infusion is something that is very nice to have in a daily makeup product. I love the versatility of the shades and their ability to perfect the skin. This is a product that looks as beautiful on alone, ad it does with makeup on top! I highly recommend picking up at least one shade!

I definitely liked the texture of these products because even the photo shows that it is homogeneous and does not burden the skin.
