| Review | Tom Ford Soleil Flawless Glow Foundation SPF 30

New surprises keep dropping from Tom Ford, this time we have been graced with a brand new foundation! This time it's actually a foundation, not like the Glow Tone Up Hydrating Cushion Compacts (full review here), which are actually skin enhancers but don't actually offer any coverage. This new foundation piqued my interest because it looks very different from their current base lineup and I tend to be a fan of anything that has "glow" in the name.

PACKAGING & PRICE

The Tom Ford Soleil Flawless Glow Foundation SPF 30 retails for $87.00 USD and is available at Nordstrom and other retailers. This foundation is housed in a beautiful frosted glass bottle with a gold dropper top. Pressing down and releasing the gold dropper top will draw in the liquid foundation into the dropper and pressing it again, you can drop the desired amount onto the back of your hand or on a palette. The bottle is very luxurious and looks very sophisticated. However, it will be difficult to travel with because it is a glass bottle.

SHADES

This foundation comes in 24 shades, which have the same naming convention as their other foundation ranges. However, be aware that the shades are not exactly the same as the other foundations but they will be very close. For example, I chose the shade 6.5 Sable because that is my shade in the Waterproof Foundation/Concealer. The Waterproof Foundation/Concealer's version of 6.5 Sable is a bit lighter and more yellow-toned, whereas the Soleil Flawless Glow Foundation is more peachy-olive in tone but it still suits my skin tone really well. I think I actually prefer the tone and color of the Soleil foundation over my current 6.5 Sable shade. I was able to order my foundation blindly online and it worked out well for me, so I think if you are familiar with your usual shade in the Tom Ford range, it wouldn't hurt to order the same shade in the Soleil formula. For reference, I am an NC30-35 in MAC foundations.

Swatches from left to right: Tom Ford Soleil Flawless Glow Foundation vs. Tom Ford Waterproof Foundation/Concealer

That being said, 20 is not a huge range of shades, as is typical with luxury beauty lines so you may have a difficult time finding a match depending on your skin tone. Just like with their most recent concealer release, it appears the shade range mostly caters to fair to medium-light skin tones. They seemed to throw in a couple of medium to tan shades and one deep shade to offer up a range of shades but there really aren't enough shades for tan to deep skin tones. This is extremely disappointing as we see other brands offering over 40 shades for their foundations. I hope that Tom Ford will start to follow this more inclusive trend.

FORMULA

I initially thought, based on the packaging, that this foundation was going to be one of those oil-based serum foundations that were so popular a couple years ago but this formula is actually oil-free! The foundation has a runny consistency, similar to a serum foundation, but it has a creamy texture when it goes on the skin. It was actually very surprising! The foundation blends into the skin beautifully and offers a medium to full coverage. You can easily build to a full coverage because of the foundation already starts at a fairly high medium coverage. I find 2-3 drops will cover the entire face and give you a nice medium coverage and 4-5 will give you a true full coverage. The foundation layers really beautifully and never looks heavy or cakey. The finish is a very natural skin-like finish with a soft luminosity. It isn't overly dewy or greasy looking at all. It just looks like very natural and healthy skin.

It feels very moisturizing and hydrating but again, it doesn't feel oily or greasy like you would expect it to. On my dry skin, I tried it without prepping my skin with moisturizer and it helped hydrate my skin! This may be attributed to the alcohol-free formula but it also claims to have nourishing red fruit extracts.  These are somewhere in the middle of the ingredients list, so don't expect this to hydrate and treat your skin. I would still recommend preparing your skin with skincare prior to application.

It sits on the skin very evenly and doesn't emphasize pores. I suspect this is because this is a very heavily silicone-based foundation. When you look at the first few ingredients, you can see several different types of -cones. If you didn't already know, ingredients with "-cone" on the end of their name, often indicate they are some form of silicone, which is often used in cosmetics to smooth over the texture on the skin. This is why you often see many primers that are heavily silicone-based and tend to have that slippery texture when you apply it onto the skin. This foundation definitely smooths over the texture on the skin and makes your complexion look very flawless. However, I don't notice a slippery texture with this foundation.

This foundation wears for beyond 8 hours on my dry skin without primer and doesn't seem to fade or break down. I also, don't powder my foundation and it seems to do very well with longevity and oil breakthrough. I would say you don't really need a primer because this foundation contains so much silicone and is so smoothing, it's like it has a built-in primer. I think additional primer would help if you had oily skin to help control excessive oil but for dry skin, this foundation is great alone. I just prime with a moisturizer on most days.

This formula also contains an SPF 30, but I would still recommend applying a higher form of sun protection if you will be outside for a prolonged period of time.

INGREDIENTS

I thought it would be important to look at the ingredients for this foundation because there are many people who may have sensitivities to silicone and this is such a silicone-heavy foundation. I was going to copy and past from Nordstrom's website but when I looked at the list in the product description, the ingredients were listed in a completely different order from what was on my box! They even have a disclaimer that says, "Ingredients are subject to change at the manufacturer's discretion. For the most complete and up-to-date list of ingredients, refer to the product packaging". Really? So I decided to type us the ingredients list for you in the order listed on the box because order does matter! In general, the first few ingredients on the list have the highest

Water\Aqua\Eau, Methyl Trimethicone, phenyl trimethicone, silica, butyloctyl salicylate, dimethicone, neopentyl glycol diheptanoate, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, butylene glycol. lauryl peg-9 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone, ethylhexyl palmitate, glycerin, trimethylsiloxysilicate/dimethiconol crosspolymer, polysilicone-11, sapindus mukorossi fruit extract, caffine, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, thermus thermophillus ferment, caesalpinia spinosa gum, morinda citrifolia fruit extract, sodium hyaluronate, dimethicone/peg-10/15 cross polymer, peg-10 dimethicone, sodium lactate, sodium pca, polyglutamic acid, lecithin, litchi chinensis seed extract, laminaria saccharina extract, methicone, triethyl citrate, tocopheryl acetate, zinc stearate, caprylyl glycol, trimethydiloxysilicate, disteardimonium, hectorite, laureth-7, citrullus vulgaris (watermelon) fruit extract, lens esculenta (lentil) fruit extract, glycine soja (soybean) protein, pyrus malus(apple) fruit extract, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, triethoxycaprylylsilane, hexylene glycol, xanthan gum, calcium chloride, sodium chloride, dipropylene glycol, dextrin, dimethicone silylate, magnesium aluminum silicate, linalool, scilica dimethyl silylate, sodium citrate, disodium edta, bht, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, sodium dehydroacetate, phenoxyethanol, [+/- mica, titanium dioxide (ci 77891), iron oxides (ci 77491), iron oxides (ci 77492), iron oxides (ci 77499)]

FINAL THOUGHTS

I am very impressed with this new foundation! It offers everything I want in a foundation, coverage and a glowing finish. The texture is very creamy and despite containing almost every derivative of silicone and silica imaginable, it doesn't seem to have that slippery consistency often associated with silicone primers. It does, however, glide seamlessly over the skin and smooths out texture. It really makes your skin look flawless and glowing! I love the fresh finish to the foundation and the lightweight feeling it has on the skin, despite the fact that it is a medium to full coverage foundation. I have to say, I'm really happy about this new foundation. It is something that is new to the Tom Ford range and seems to be a new formulation I haven't really seen around in the market. I think this foundation can work on a wide range of skin types, even oily skin types with the right primer. The shade range is slightly lacking but this is the unfortunate case with many luxury brands. This foundation is definitely up there in the rankings of my top foundations and worth giving a try if you love a glowy complexion.

  1. It's still not a great range, but there are 24 total shades on the TF website. My Nords SA also told me this foundation is exclusive to Nordstrom (aside from TF direct, that is)
