| Review | Tom Ford Lip Lacquers

OH..MY..GOSH... Tom Ford has finally come out with lip lacquers for summer 2018! Prepare to weep for you wallets because they're about to emptied! Now, it isn't the first time they have released lip lacquers however, their first attempt at it left much to be desired. I LOVE lip lacquers!!! I mean I have a serious OBSESSION with them after I discovered the Armani Ecstasy Lacquers, which if you have been following me for a while, you know I own about every shade of these! So of course when my favorite brand, Tom Ford, came out with this latest release... I HAD to try them out!

The Tom Ford Lip Lacquers retail for $54.00 USD and are available at Tom Ford, Sephora, Neiman Marcus and other retailers and will be a permanent addition to the brand! The come in 3 finishes - matte (6 shades) , patent (6 shades), and metal (6 shades) and 18 shades total! The patent finishes were previously released shades in their old formula, which came out of this click pen with a sponge tip applicator. It was not well executed all around. This new formulation comes in your classic sleek tube with a doe-foot applicator, which I much prefer! It looks very luxurious with a clear bottom section so you can see the color, which is so much better than the totally opaque old packaging! I know they were trying to to be innovative and different with the original release of the lacquers but the packaging and application method was just clumsy. I am also very excited to see new shades and finishes for these lacquers and I have very high hopes for the new formula.

SHADES

Universal Appeal (matte) - This creamy matte nude beige shade looks lighter in the tube than it goes on the lips. On the lips it is actually a warm medium-beige nude with a pink undertone. I can see it being quite flattering on most skin tones. It is very reminiscent of the YSL Tatouage Couture Matte Stain in the shade 7 Nu.

Pussycat (matte) - This creamy medium pink will suit almost any skin tone. It offers the perfect cool mauve lip color that is perfect for daily wear and any occasion. It would make a great bridal lip color, especially because the formula is so long-wearing!

No Vacancy (patent) - This was my favorite shade of all the original Patent Finish Lip Color formula. It is a electric coral-red shade with a very strong pink undertone and it is a shade that is so eye-catching that I received many compliments every time I wore it, so I had to get the latest formula of this shade! The pink is quite strong in this shade so after the top most layer is worn off, it become more of a hot pink shade.

Erotic (patent) - This cool hot pink shade is very vibrant and has quite an electric tone. It really remind me of a bright Barbie-pink! It is very close to MAC Candy Yum Yum lipstick but more wearable because of the lack of the white base.

Pink Sabre (metal) - This medium metallic pink looks very much like the metallic version of pussycat. It has a silver shimmer running throughout it but it is is very wearable and looks really chic! I was worried it would look a bit tacky and would be too frosty but it wasn't at all. It is a very flattering metallic pinks shade for many skin tones.

Metal Flame (metal) - I can't resist a orange or coral lip for spring and summer. This shade is a metallic tangerine shade with very fine flecks of copper shimmer that will looks great on anyone but especially if you develop a little tan. This shade is not a true metallic on the lips. It may have some shimmer but the finish isn't a true metallic, it just has an intense sheen across the lips, almost like a true vinyl finish.

FORMULA

Matte -

Described on the Tom Ford website as...
LIQUID. RICH. VELVET.
RICH AND CREAMY UPON APPLICATION, THE LUXE FORMULA TRANSFORMS INTO FEATHER-LIGHT, CONCENTRATED COLOR IN FADE-RESISTANT, FULL-COVERAGE VELVET MATTE. TOM FORD LIP LACQUER DELIVERS PURE, UNADULTERATED LIQUID LIP COLOR IN THREE DECADENT FORMULAS A LIQUID MATTE, LIQUID METAL AND LIQUID PATENT. DRENCHED IN LONGWEARING, STAY-TRUE COLOR, LIPS DELIGHT IN LIGHTWEIGHT, COMFORTABLE TEXTURES INFUSED WITH SMOOTHING MOISTURIZERS.
I wouldn't consider a matte liquid lipstick a "lacquer" because lacquer implies "shiny" but I guess they're a liquid lip product so they have been bundled into this collection. Anyways, these matte lacquers have a comfortable formula and feel very lightweight. They have a very soft and velvety suede-like finish to the lips. They also have a very noticeable vanilla scent but it isn't overwhelming. They are a thin liquid, not nearly as thing and runny as the Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipsticks but not as thick as the Colourpop Liquid Lipsticks. It's somewhere in between because it feels light but it does sink into the lips, like the Colourpop Liquid Lipsticks. These are quite pigmented and apply almost evenly on the first coat, you can't really tell too much but there will be some areas you may want to go over with a second coat because they are not as opaque. Even with multiple layers, it doesn't feel heavy of paint-like on the lips. They set rather quickly and when they do, they are transfer-proof! Unless you get your lips fairly wet, there is no transfer, which is really nice! Despite being transfer-proof, it still feels very comfortable on throughout the day. I think the biggest disappointment with this formula is how it sets and sinks into your lips. It can really emphasizes the texture of your lips, which is really unappealing.

Patent -

Described on the Tom Ford website as...
LIQUID. VIBRANT. VINYL.
COMBINING A LIP STAIN WITH AN ULTRA-GLOSSY FINISH, INTENSE VIBRANT SHADES EVOKE THE TRANSFIXING LOOK OF SKINTIGHT VINYL. TOM FORD LIP LACQUER DELIVERS PURE, UNADULTERATED LIQUID LIP COLOR IN THREE DECADENT FORMULAS  A LIQUID MATTE, LIQUID METAL AND LIQUID PATENT. DRENCHED IN LONGWEARING, STAY-TRUE COLOR, LIPS DELIGHT IN LIGHTWEIGHT, COMFORTABLE TEXTURES INFUSED WITH SMOOTHING MOISTURIZERS.
These patent shades are exactly as described, they are vibrant and glossy. These have a thick gel consistency. From what I can tell, this formula is the same as the previous version. The major difference is the method of application which seems to dictate the consistency of this product. With the click pen, there is always too much product and because the formula is quite thick, the product feels goopy and is difficult to apply precisely and evenly. This new applicator suits the product much better and allows it to glide onto the lips in an even and smooth coat. This finish is a true lacquer finish, it is very pigmented and creates a stain to the lips. The finish is incredibly high shine and looks patent. The formula smooths over lines and texture and leave the lips with a plump and patent shine. It is incredibly long wearing because of the stain and the thicker consistency. It can last through a fair amount of eating and drinking, leaving a bitten flushed look left to the lips.

Metal -

Described on the Tom Ford website as...
LIQUID. DIMENSIONAL. REFLECTIVE.
AN INNOVATIVE LIQUID-GEL WITH OPTICAL PLUMPING EFFECTS, PURE METALLIC COLOR WITH MIRROR-LIKE DIMENSION GLIDES ON WITH INTENSE LUSTROUS IMPACT. TOM FORD LIP LACQUER DELIVERS PURE, UNADULTERATED LIQUID LIP COLOR IN THREE DECADENT FORMULAS A LIQUID MATTE, LIQUID METAL AND LIQUID PATENT. DRENCHED IN LONGWEARING, STAY-TRUE COLOR, LIPS DELIGHT IN LIGHTWEIGHT, COMFORTABLE TEXTURES INFUSED WITH SMOOTHING MOISTURIZERS.
These metal shades are very opaque! It's actually quite shocking! They are opaque in one coat and they apply quite evenly across the lips. They feel very comfortable and non-sticky. The metallic finish is not as obvious on some of the shades, they appear to be more of a strong sheen and reflective. The fine shimmers add a nice reflective finish and as the lip color wears off, they don't draw attention to the worn off areas or shift to create uneven patches across the lips. I had a bit of an issue with the Dior Addict Lacquer Plumps in the glitter finish wearing off quite patchy but that formula is much more hydrating and balmy, so it has significant more movement. Read about the Dior Lacquer Plumps here. These do transfer, pretty significantly but because they are so opaque, only the top most layer transfers and my lips still look pristine after drinking from a cup or mug! The wear-time is exceptional and incredibly impressive! Though I continue to see transfer on my glass and water bottle, my lip color is completely opaque and looks unmoved! I don't know what kind of witchcraft this is but I like it! It also stains your lips a little so, even if most of it wears off, it wears off very evenly. Even after eating, my lip color was significantly faded but very even!

FINAL THOUGHTS

I think the common theme among all the finishes of this product is that they are very long-wearing! Which I really love! I think for the most part they are comfortable. The mattes are not surprisingly, probably the least comfortable formula to wear throughout the day however, with well hydrated and prepped lips they can be worn fairly comfortably. The pigmentation among all the lip colors is exceptional, they all see to provide a very opaque layer upon first application. Again,  I think the mattes have the most patchy consistency but not significantly. They still apply quite evenly but need a bit more product to be perfect. I have to say, I am very impressed with all of these. I think the most unique formula are the metals, they have a reflective metallic finish but don't wear off in a patchy or inconsistent manner. I am very impressed with the longevity of these lip colors and the formulas seem quite comfortable too. I expect to get more of these and I hope they will expand the range with some more shades! A few more nude shades wouldn't hurt, but I just love me some nude shades!
