| Review | Tom Ford Gloss Luxe Lip Gloss

Lately, Tom Ford has been doing a huge overhaul of their products, reformulating many of their permanent products and I must say, not all of them are an improvement. This new formula has its pros and cons. I'm honestly a little torn on how I feel about this formula but read on to understand more about it. This new stage in the Tom Ford brand seems to be moving toward more luxurious packaging and formulations than ever before. It is a step in the right direction to continue to keep fans excited and interested in the brand. Frankly, the past few releases have left a lot to be desired from the brand and while I still believe the brand is quite hit or miss these days, this new lip gloss formulation has really redeemed them in my eyes. Well.... somewhat...

PRICE & PACKAGING

The Tom Ford Gloss Luxe Lip Gloss retail for $55.00 USD and is available at Sephora and other retailers. This gloss is beautifully packaged in a heavy clear tube with gold and cognac accent panels on the sides. This is very different from their original gloss packaging, which was a very simple clear plastic tube with the cognac cap. These new glosses are significantly heavier, the packaging is larger both in width and height, and they look so much more luxurious. I feel like this is what was always meant to be the gloss packaging but since they were a growing brand, some things like packaging didn't get as much attention in the early years. Now that the brand is reformulating, the decided it was time to align the packaging with the brand and they did a really amazing job.

SHADES

There are 20 shades total with a mixture of cream finishes, which don't contain any pearl and glosses that do contain a pearl or shimmer.

Swatches from left to right: Aura, Impulse, Love Lust, Tantalize (scroll down for lip swatches)

Aura - This shade is a warm nude with a light peachy tone. It appears much deeper in the tube but on the lips, it is a much lighter nude shade. I personally feel that this shade can't be worn entirely alone. I think this is great paired with a lip liner or a lipstick. This shade appears to have very fine gold shimmers throughout it in the tube but it doesn't translate on the lips, I would say it's a cream finish. This shade sinks into the lip lines a lot but isn't too noticeable unless you're fairly close.

Love Lust - This shade is a very cool-toned lavender-pink. This shade is a bit more vibrant and pinker than it appears in the tube. This shade has no shimmer and is also a cream finish. This shade sinks into the lip lines a lot but isn't too noticeable unless you're fairly close.

Impulse - This shade is significantly sheerer than the other shades I chose. It appears to be a warm pink in the tube but on the lips, it is a very sheer subtly warm pale pink on the lips. This shade is also supposed to have some shimmer, which doesn't translate very well onto the lips. This shade is very close to Aura but slightly more pink and much sheerer. It does give a very nice natural flush to the lips.

Tantalize - This shade is a pinky-coral with gold shimmer throughout it. The shimmers are very fine and do seem to translate on the lips but it is very subtle. I found that this shade seemed to sink into lip lines the least. It still sinks into lip lines but it doesn't look as extreme as some of the other shades. This shade has an almost "jelly" look to it.

APPLICATION & FORMULA

Let's start with the applicator on this gloss. The applicator is quite a long and pointed doe-foot sponge applicator with a lot of flexibility. The applicator looks very much like a petal or an arrowhead and has a very soft sponge material. It is identical to the Luxe Lip Lacquers (review here). The tip is very flexible allowing the applicator to easily glide and spread the gloss across the lips without disturbing any color or liner underneath. It also makes for a very pleasant application experience. The applicator also picks up a fair amount of product, so you don't have to continuously dip into the tube. I find one application of gloss is enough to cover my lips.

The formula of this gloss is out-of-this-world AMAZING! Now, you may think I'm being biased because Tom Ford is one of my favorite brands but I have never been shy about putting forth my true opinions on their products before. Also, I honestly didn't have high hopes for this gloss initially because I feel like the quality of the recent products has been quite poor lately. However, these glosses have a truly incredible balmy and moisturizing formula! They feel like a balmy-gel on the lips and they remind me of one of my all-time favorite lip products, the Sisley Paris Phyto-Lip Delight Sensorial Lip Oil (full review here). They don't feel like a lip gloss at all but more like a tinted lip treatment, which I absolutely love! This formula is so luxurious, hence the name. It just feels incredibly nourishing and offers a light pigment with a soft shine. If you're looking for a mirror-like reflective gloss, you should look elsewhere. I actually think these glosses offer the perfect amount of shine while being extremely comfortable. What I also like about this formula is that it smooths out the lips and plumps out lip lines. These have a lovely sweet vanilla fragrance, like their lipsticks, and it is incredibly pleasant but never overwhelming.

Unfortunately, the pigment from light shades sinks into lip lines. This tends to happen with most of those milky light shades in other brands as well. I find that because of this very smoothing formula, the pigment sinking into lip lines isn't as apparent unless you are quite close. However, it is a major set back about this formula and for a luxury brand to have such a huge flaw in their product. This major flaw has me feeling very torn about this gloss because, on one hand, I absolutely adore the formula but on the other, this pigment sinking issue is pretty terrible. Especially, since the point of a colored lip gloss is to have both gloss and pigment. This gloss really fails on half of what makes up a gloss, which is incredibly disappointing!

FINAL THOUGHTS

I must say that I LOVE the new formula, except for the fact that the pigment sinks into lip lines! I haven't tried all the shades but it seems to a common complaint with these glosses. I have heard others who have bought other shades say the same thing. I can see this being an especially huge issue with the deeper and brighter shades. The sinking into the lip lines isn't very apparent unless you're quite close to a person, however, it's still a major downfall in the formula. I initially only bought two shades and I was torn on whether or not I needed to get more but I ended up getting some because I wanted to see if other shades may be different. The shade Tantalize, which has a more jelly-like finish and shimmer in it, seems to sink into the lines the least.

I love the formula so much that I am trying very hard to overlook this flaw but it does bother me. Honestly,  the formula is so phenomenal that I'm just going to look the other way. I find myself constantly reaching for these glosses because the feels so comfortable and nourishing on the lips! My lips just feel so plush and smooth. I have been keeping them in my bag and I actually touch up my lips color, which is really rare for me but I just love the feeling so much! I would say, go to the counter and try these on your lips! You won't disagree that the formula is divine and also you can figure out which shades will sink into your lip lines the most. This is a product that I don't recommend grabbing blindly but I think if you can find a shade you're really satisfied with, it will be the only gloss you'll ever want to use! Tom Ford Team, please keep this formula but fix the sinking into lip lines issue and I'll buy them all!
